317 Stainless Steel Flange

    317 Stainless Steel Flange Supplier: 317, 317L

317 stainless steel flange is an austenitic stainless steel flange containing 3.0%–4.0% molybdenum.

317L is a low-carbon version of 317, with carbon content limited to 0.03% or less.

Both 317 and 317L stainless steel flanges are high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steels. They are upgraded versions of the 316 stainless steel flange, offering superior corrosion resistance and mechanical strength through increased chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content.

Chemical Composition of 317 Stainless Steel Flange (317/L)

The chemical compositions of 317 and 317L stainless steel flanges are very similar;the key difference lies in their carbon content. The following are typical chemical composition percentages based on ASTM A182.

    Analysis of Ingredient Characteristics

    High Molybdenum Content:
Grade 317L has a higher molybdenum content than Grade 316,significantly enhancing the flange’s resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride-containing environments and reducing acids.
    Low-carbon Version (317L):
Reducing the carbon content to below 0.03% prevents the formation of chromium carbide precipitates during welding, thereby avoiding intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone.
    High Nickel And Chromium:
These ensure a stable austenitic structure and provide excellent overall oxidation resistance.

Mechanical Properties of 317 Stainless Steel Flange Series

317 stainless steel flange and 317L stainless steel flange exhibit good strength and toughness at room temperature.Although their chemical compositions differ slightly, their mechanical property requirements are generally specified uniformly in the ASTM A182 standard.
    Performance Metrics317317L
    Tensile Strength≥ 515 MPa (75 ksi)≥ 515 MPa (75 ksi)
    Yield Strength 0.2%≥ 205 MPa (30 ksi)≥ 205 MPa (30 ksi)
    Elongation in 50mm≥ 35%≥ 35%
    Hardness≤ 217 HBW(95 HRB)≤ 217 HBW(95 HRB)

    Minor Differences in Practical Application

Although the standards specify the same minimum strength requirements for both grades,in practice,317 typically has a slightly higher tensile strength than 317L due to its slightly higher carbon content. To compensate for the loss of strength resulting from the lower carbon content,317L sometimes maintains its mechanical properties by making slight adjustments to its nitrogen content.

4 Manufacturing Methods for 317 Stainless Steel Flange

    Forging

Forging is the most commonly used and highest-quality method, and is the preferred choice for high-quality industrial flanges. The forging process eliminates internal porosity and defects in the steel, optimizes grain orientation, and gives the flange the highest compressive strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance.

    Centrifugal Casting

Centrifugal casting is primarily used to manufacture large-sized or custom-sized flanges. Compared to conventional sand casting, centrifugal casting produces a denser microstructure, and the central portion of the flange is typically free of porosity. However, its mechanical properties are slightly inferior, and dimensional accuracy is limited.

    Plate Cutting

Plate cutting offers low costs and short production cycles, making it suitable for applications with modest pressure requirements. However, because the cutting process disrupts the original grain orientation of the plate, its pressure-bearing capacity is inferior to that of forgings.

    Ring Rolling

Ring rolling can produce flanges with very large diameters while retaining a continuous grain flow similar to that of conventional forging. It should be noted that if a sheet is bent into a ring and then butt-welded,this is classified as the “roll-welding method,” which typically requires 100% X-ray inspection.

FAQs About 317 Stainless Steel Flange Grades

This is because it contains a higher percentage of molybdenum. While 316L contains 2%–3% molybdenum,317L contains 3%–4%. 317L offers better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion when exposed to chloride-containing solutions or strongly reducing acids.

Generally, you can substitute 317L for 317 because 317L offers better corrosion resistance and is easier to weld.If the design drawings specify 317L,you should not substitute 317 without careful consideration;unless the welded joint undergoes an expensive post-weld annealing process,it may fail prematurely.

Of course, you can also use flanges that are rated for both 317 and 317L.As a supplier with over a decade of experience in stainless steel products,Kaysuns can provide you with such flanges. Please feel free to contact us at any time.

Although 317L offers excellent creep resistance at high temperatures,it does have its limitations.Prolonged exposure to temperatures between 427°C and 816°C may cause metal embrittlement (formation of the σ phase). If your operating conditions consistently exceed 450°C,we recommend consulting a materials engineer to determine whether you need to upgrade to a higher-grade alloy or a nickel-based alloy.
