Inconel 625 Plate

    Inconel 625 Plate

An inconel 625 plate is a flat, thick piece of nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy.Renowned for exceptional strength, superior weldability, and outstanding resistance to corrosion and high temperatures,it is widely used in extreme environments like marine, offshore, and aerospace applications.

Key Characteristics of Inconel 625 Plate

    • Corrosion Resistance:
Highly resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress-corrosion cracking. It performs exceptionally well in seawater and chemical processing environments.
    • Temperature Tolerance:
Retains its mechanical integrity and resists scaling/oxidation across temperatures ranging from cryogenic levels up to 980°C (1800°F).
    • Excellent Weldability:
Unlike many superalloys,Inconel 625 plates are exceptionally easy to weld and fabricators can easily join them to other components.
    • Superior Corrosion Resistance:
It is highly resistant to oxidizing and nonoxidizing atmospheres. The high nickel content makes it virtually immune to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.

    Role of Key Alloying Elements

    • Nickel:
Provides the core structural matrix. It grants exceptional resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking and handles extreme high/low thermal cycles.
    • Chromium:
Delivers superior resistance to oxidizing environments,high-temperature scaling, and oxidation.
    • Molybdenum:
Increases mechanical strength at high temperatures. It also protects the plate against localized pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and acid environments.
    • Niobium / Columbium:
Works directly alongside the Molybdenum to produce a solid-solution strengthening effect. This stiffens the alloy matrix, granting high tensile strength without requiring precipitation-hardening heat treatments.

Mechanical Properties of Inconel 625 Plate

The mechanical properties of Inconel 625 plate are primarily derived from the solid-solution strengthening effects of molybdenum and niobium within its nickel-chromium matrix. This allows the material to retain high tensile strength, exceptional toughness, and ductility from cryogenic temperatures up to 2,000°F (1,093°C) without needing precipitation-hardening heat treatments.

    Mechanical Performance by Material Grade

According to ASTM B443,Inconel 625 plates are divided into two distinct grades based on their processing temperature and intended operating environment:

    Annealed (Grade 1)

    • Heat Treatment:
      Processed at 1,600°F–1,850°F (871°C–1,010°C).
    • Characteristics:
Fine-grained structure that delivers the highest room-temperature tensile and yield strengths, alongside optimal fatigue properties.
    • Best For:
Applications operating below 1,100°F (593°C), such as marine hardware and chemical reaction vessels.

    Solution Annealed (Grade 2)

    • Heat Treatment:
Processed at 2,000°F (1,093°C) minimum, followed by rapid cooling to prevent carbide precipitation.
    • Characteristics:
Coarser-grained structure. While it shows slightly lower tensile strength at room temperature,it provides significantly higher creep and stress-rupture strength.
    • Best For:
Applications operating above 1,100°F (593°C) where resistance to long-term high-temperature deformation is critical (e.g., aerospace exhaust systems, furnace components).

    Modulus of Elasticity & Toughness

    • Elastic Modulus (E):
30.1 × 10⁶ psi (207.5 GPa) at room temperature. It drops gradually at higher temperatures, maintaining strong structural rigidity compared to standard steels.
    • Impact Toughness:
It exhibits exceptional Charpy V-notch impact strength.Notably,it retains its high fracture toughness and ductility at cryogenic temperatures without undergoing a ductile-to-brittle transition.

Our Advantages in Manufacturing Inconel 625 Plate

As a professional manufacturer of stainless steel pipes and pipe fittings in China, our production of Inconel 625 sheet offers the following key advantages:Advanced Melting & High-Purity Refining,Precision Thermomechanical Rolling & Grain Structure Control,State-of-the-Art Heat Treatment & Surface Finishing, and Comprehensive NDT Testing & Full Traceability.

    Melting & Refining

Utilizing Vacuum Induction Melting followed by Vacuum Arc Remelting ensures extreme chemical cleanliness.
This dual-refining process removes trace impurities and gases, eliminating the risk of micro-segregation in heavy plates.
Guarantees that critical strengthening elements like Niobium and Molybdenum are perfectly balanced for optimal solid-solution strengthening.

    Thermomechanical Rolling and Grain Control

Advanced rolling mills accurately control deformation ratios and finishing temperatures to deliver both Grade 1 and Grade 2 structures.
Heavy-duty hydraulic leveling and rolling ensure consistent yield and tensile strength across the entire width and length of the plate.
Tight dimensional control minimizes machining allowance, saving material costs for end-user fabrications.

    Treatment & Surface Finishing

High-capacity solution annealing furnaces paired with rapid water/air quenching prevent secondary phase (γ” or δ) and carbide precipitation.
Proper heat treatment ensures maximum resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and intergranular attack.
Automated shot-blasting and pickling lines thoroughly remove high-temperature mill scale, delivering a clean, passivated plate surface.

    NDT Testing & Full Traceability

Every heavy plate undergoes rigorous volumetric ultrasonic scanning (per ASTM A578/A435) to guarantee zero internal voids, laminations,or defects.
    In-house testing certifies exact room-temperature and high-temperature tensile properties,impact toughness,and grain size.
Complete material documentation and heat-number tracking ensure compliance with international AMS,NACE, and ASME codes.

    FAQs About Inconel 625 Plate

The primary distinction lies in the heat treatment temperature and resulting grain size.Grade 1 is conventional annealed (1,600°F–1,850°F / 871°C–1,010°C),featuring a fine-grained structure for maximum room-temperature strength.Grade 2 is solution annealed (≥2,000°F / ≥1,093°C),resulting in a coarser grain structure optimized for high-temperature resistance.

Select Grade 1 for applications operating below 1,100°F (593°C) where high yield strength and aqueous corrosion resistance are critical (e.g., marine hardware, chemical vessels).

Choose Grade 2 for service temperatures above 1,100°F (593°C) where resistance to long-term creep and stress-rupture is required (e.g., aerospace exhaust, furnace parts).

Because it relies on solid-solution strengthening (from molybdenum and niobium) rather than precipitation hardening,Inconel 625 plates do not require post-weld heat treatment to restore mechanical or corrosion properties.Typically use a matching ERNiCrMo-3 filler metal.

Unlike many nickel-based superalloys,Inconel 625 exhibits exceptional weldability and resists hot cracking during the welding process. It can be welded using standard methods like GTAW (TIG) or GMAW (MIG).

Inconel 625 is superior for maximum corrosion resistance and high-temperature ductility. It is exceptionally easy to weld and offers outstanding protection against aggressive acids and seawater.

Inconel 718 is superior for raw mechanical strength. It is a precipitation-hardening alloy that, after aging heat treatments, achieves yield strengths more than double that of Inconel 625.However,it is much harder to weld and less resistant to localized corrosion.
