Nimonic 86 Overview | Chemical Composition | Mechanical Properties

Nimonic 86 is a high performance nickel-based alloy that is part of the Nimonic Alloy family. Designed for high-temperature service, this alloy has excellent oxidation resistance and also resists carburization. The result is a durable alloy that will keep your pipes and fittings in service for years to come.

    Nimonic 86 | UNS N07086

Nimonic 86 is a solid solution strengthened alloy, which means it cannot be age hardened. Its strength is realized through its chemical composition. It contains high levels of chromium and molybdenum, which provide excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and carburization. It provides reliable performance at temperatures up to 1100 ℃ (2012 ℉).

    Key Advantages of Nimonic 86

Nimonic 86 can withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 1100°C (2012°F) while providing oxidation resistance.

Retains its shape under prolonged stress and at high temperatures. Good resistance to creep deformation, although age hardening is not possible.

Nimonic 86 is easy to weld, simplifying complex fabrication.

Retains its properties when exposed to heat, making it ideal for high-temperature applications.

Nimonic 86 in High Temperature Piping Systems

    • Gas Turbine Components: Nimonic 86 can withstand high heat and stress. It can be used for burner liners, flame tubes, aerospace and power generation.
    • Furnace Components: Furnace linings and shrouds. Withstands sustained high temperatures and resists scaling.
    • Pipes and Bellows: High-temperature pipes and expansion bellows can be made from raw materials that can withstand thermal cycling.
    • Piping Systems: Key fittings require extreme heat resistance, and Nimonic 86 delivers.

    Sourcing and Fabricating Nimonic 86

A complete Material Test Report (MTR) is required. It verifies the precise composition of the alloy and ensures its performance.

Work with specialized suppliers of stainless steel pipe and fittings. They understand these alloy steels and can ensure proper fabrication and quality control, and are ISO 9001 and CE-PED certified.

It is difficult to machine and requires special tools. Specific welding techniques are essential to ensure the integrity of the weld.

It is expensive, so it is important to assess whether the product has a longer service life. This can justify its higher initial cost.
