Hastelloy B Explained: Properties and Applications

Hastelloy B is a family of nickel-molybdenum superalloys. A key solution for applications where standard stainless steel pipes or stainless steel pipe fittings  would fail. This superalloy delivers exceptional resistance to reducing acid environments. Extremely corrosive chemicals are handled with ease.

Introduction to the Hastelloy B Series

The Hastelloy B series is a specialized group of alloys.Remarkable corrosion resistance comes from a unique composition.Key elements include nickel and molybdenum.Molybdenum provides exceptional resilience against hydrochloric acid.Sulfuric and phosphoric acids also work well with the material.

    What is Hastelloy Alloy

Hastelloy Alloy contains a high proportion of nickel, and also contains chromium and molybdenum. The family includes three main series. They are the B series, C series, and G series. Each is designed for specific environments.

Key Advantages of Hastelloy B Series

Hydrochloric acid is resisted in all concentrations. Sulfuric and phosphoric acids are also effectively fought.

Properties are maintained at high heat. The alloy resists thermal stress. Long service life is ensured in demanding applications.

Easy fabrication is a major benefit. Strong welds are formed without loss of properties. Complex pipes and fittings are thus simpler to create.

The alloys show great resilience against stress corrosion cracking. This is a common failure point for many stainless steels. A system’s safety and integrity are ensured by this property.

Key Disadvantages of Hastelloy B Series

Costly elements are found in the alloy’s composition. Nickel and molybdenum increase its price. The material is much more expensive than standard stainless steels.

Poor reactions occur with oxidizing agents. These include nitric acid and ferric salts. A major limitation for this alloy is its poor performance here.

High hardness makes machining difficult. Specialized tools and speeds are required. Fabrication time and expense are both increased.

As a specialized alloy, widespread availability is not guaranteed. Longer project lead times can be a result.

The Natural Degradation Process of Hastelloy B

    • Creep and Stress Rupture: High temperatures and constant stress can cause a slow, permanent deformation. Creep deformation is the name for this process. Over many years, eventual failure can result. A gradual decrease in the alloy’s strength occurs over time.
    • Fatigue: Small cracks can form over time in parts exposed to repeated stress cycles. These cracks grow and spread. Ultimately, the part can fail.
    • Long-Term Corrosion: While highly resistant, prolonged exposure to aggressive chemicals can cause degradation. Pitting or surface thinning can occur over many years. This happens very slowly, but it is a natural part of the alloy’s life.
    • Oxidizing Environments: This alloy does not handle oxidizing agents well. Exposure to such chemicals over time can cause severe, rapid corrosion. A dramatic shortening of its lifespan is the result.

Hastelloy B Series in Piping Systems

    • Chemical Processing: Extreme corrosion resistance is provided by Hastelloy B for critical stainless steel pipe fittings. Your system works perfectly, even with aggressive reducing chemicals.
    • Reactors and Vessels: A perfect material for chemical reactors and vessels. The alloy withstands highly corrosive acids. Efficient and safe operation is ensured by its use.
    • Pharmaceutical Industry: Hastelloy B is an excellent choice. A high-purity system is ideal for this material. The alloy resists corrosion and prevents product contamination.
    • Acetic Acid Production: Essential for pipes and fittings in acetic acid production. Hastelloy B handles the corrosive process. The alloy maintains its integrity. This prevents leaks and costly downtime.

    Sourcing and Fabricating Hastelloy Alloy

A complete Material Test Report (MTR) is required. It verifies the precise composition of the alloy and ensures its performance.

Work with specialized suppliers of stainless steel pipe and fittings. They understand these alloy steels and can ensure proper fabrication and quality control, and are ISO 9001 and CE-PED certified.

This alloy requires specific procedures. Proper welding technique ensures the integrity of the weld.

It is expensive, so it is important to assess whether the product has a longer service life. This can justify its higher initial cost.
