Wuhu Shipyard Delivers 6,600 DWT Duplex Stainless Steel Chemical Tanker

    Tabla de contenido

Wuhu Shipyard has delivered RF RAN, the first vessel in a new series of 6,600 DWT chemical tankers, to Norway’s RF Ocean. The ship is a duplex stainless steel chemical tanker with DC electric propulsion, and its hull and cargo system were built using 2205 duplex stainless steel thin plate.

The delivery is notable for a specific reason: it marks a meaningful step forward for Chinese shipyards in the small-to-medium high-end chemical tanker segment — a market historically dominated by a small number of European and Japanese yards. It also puts a spotlight on the material that makes such vessels possible.

    The Delivery: RF RAN

According to the announcement, the vessel was handed over recently to RF Ocean and represents the first of a series. Key characteristics include:

    • 6,600 DWT — a size class well suited to regional chemical distribution rather than deep-sea crude-scale transport.
    • Duplex stainless steel cargo tanks built from 2205 thin plate.
    • DC electric propulsion, a configuration that offers flexible power management and lower emissions across varying load profiles.
    • Environmental performance and transport efficiency described as reaching internationally advanced levels.

The shipyard stated that the delivery validates its capability in high-end specialised shipbuilding and lays a foundation for subsequent vessels in the series. Batch construction — not a one-off demonstrator — is the significant part of that statement.

Why Chemical Tankers Use 2205 Duplex

A chemical tanker is essentially a floating collection of corrosion tests. Each cargo tank may carry a different substance — acids, alkalis, solvents, vegetable oils, molasses — and each presents a different corrosion mechanism. The tank material has to resist all of them, often with only a thorough wash between cargoes.

2205 duplex stainless steel, designated UNS S32205 / S31803 and covered by standards such as ASTM A240 and EN 10088-2, is a two-phase alloy: roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite. That microstructure delivers a combination that neither phase achieves alone.

For a ship, the higher strength is not merely a mechanical advantage. Thinner plate means less steel, less weight and more cargo capacity — a direct commercial benefit over the vessel’s twenty-plus year life. The higher pitting resistance means aggressive cargoes can be carried without the coating maintenance regime that mild steel tanks require.

The Welding Problem With Thin Duplex Plate

Duplex stainless steel has a reputation for being difficult to weld, and thin plate makes it harder rather than easier. The reason is that the alloy’s corrosion resistance depends on maintaining a balanced ferrite-to-austenite ratio, typically in the range of roughly 35–55% ferrite in the weld metal and heat-affected zone.

    Three mechanisms threaten that balance:

    1. Excessive heat input

Too much heat produces coarse ferrite and promotes the formation of sigma phase, a brittle intermetallic that destroys both toughness and corrosion resistance. Too little heat, on the other hand, cools so fast that austenite cannot reform, leaving a ferrite-rich weld that is susceptible to chloride attack.

    2. Thin plate distortion

Thin duplex plate is far less forgiving of distortion than thick plate. A cargo tank that is out of flatness by more than a few millimetres will not fit its adjacent structure. Controlling this requires a carefully sequenced welding procedure, rigid fixtures and often a matched heat sink.

    3. Shielding and purging

Duplex welds need effective backing gas and, in many procedures, nitrogen-bearing shielding gas to promote austenite reformation in the root and to maintain corrosion resistance on the inside surface of the tank.

What the Shipyard Had to Solve

Wuhu Shipyard’s technical team reported solving three connected challenges:

    • Thin-plate welding — developing qualified welding procedures specifically for thin 2205 plate rather than adapting procedures intended for thicker material.
    • Millimetre-level accuracy control of total blocks — assembling large blocks within a tolerance that allows them to be joined without rework.
    • Integration and commissioning of the DC electric propulsion system — a system-level challenge rather than a materials one, but one that determines whether the vessel meets its efficiency claims.

The fact that the yard describes the design as ready for batch construction is arguably more important than the first delivery itself. A single vessel proves a concept; a series proves a process.

What It Means for Duplex Pipe and Fitting Demand

Chemical tankers consume duplex stainless steel in three forms: plate for tank walls, tubo for cargo and stripping lines, and accesorios for the manifold, valves and pump connections. A single 6,600 DWT vessel represents a substantial bill of material across all three.

As Chinese yards win more of this segment, the demand signal moves closer to domestic duplex producers — and, by extension, to suppliers able to provide pipe and fittings in matching grades with full traceability. Seamless duplex pipe is typically specified to ASTM A789 / A790 o EN 10216-5, while butt-weld fittings follow ASTM A815.

KAYSUNS supplies 2205 and 2507 duplex stainless steel pipe and matching fittings, and has published a technical guide on the advantages of duplex 2205 pipe as well as its performance characteristics.

    PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES

    Why is 2205 called “duplex”?

Because its microstructure contains both austenite and ferrite in roughly equal proportions. The two-phase structure combines the toughness and weldability of austenite with the strength and chloride resistance of ferrite.

Can 2205 replace 316L in chemical service?

In many chloride-bearing environments, yes — 2205 offers higher pitting resistance and roughly double the yield strength. But it is not a universal substitute: it has a lower useful temperature ceiling than some austenitic grades and is more sensitive to welding procedure.

What standards cover duplex pipe for shipbuilding?

Seamless and welded duplex pipe is commonly specified to ASTM A789/A790 or EN 10216-5, with fittings to ASTM A815. Classification societies may add their own approval requirements.

Is duplex harder to machine than 316L?

Yes. The higher strength and work-hardening behaviour require lower cutting speeds, higher feed rates and more rigid tooling. It is manageable with the right parameters, but it is not a drop-in replacement on the shop floor.
