F11 and F12 : High-Temp Twins

If your piping system is constantly operating at high temperatures, this is where F11 and F12 alloys come in. Standard carbon steel may lack the necessary strength. These alloys are both chromium-molybdenum steels, which are slightly different, but ensure that your stainless steel pipes and stainless steel pipe fittings will perform reliably when subjected to heat.

What Are F11 and F12 Alloys? High-Temperature Specialists!

F11 and F12 are low alloy steels designed for high temperature service. They contain chromium and molybdenum, which provide corrosion resistance, while molybdenum improves high-temperature strength and has high creep resistance. These alloys are commonly used in the power generation, oil and gas industries.

    F11 and F12: Key Differentiators

F11 has a chromium content of 1.00-1.50% and F12 has a chromium content of 0.80-1.20%. This slight difference affects corrosion and oxidation resistance, so F11 is a little more protective.

With a molybdenum content of 0.44-0.65%, F11 and F12 have essentially the same molybdenum content. This ensures similar creep resistance at design temperatures.

F11 is generally slightly stronger, while F12 may have slightly better weldability due to its lower degree of alloying. Both require proper welding procedures.

F11 is slightly more expensive, reflecting its slightly higher alloy content. However, both are cost effective when compared to stainless steel.

Both have similar high temperature applications. F11 is often preferred for slightly more demanding conditions, while F11 is more common where higher chromium content is required.

    Applications in High-Temperature Piping Systems

    • Power Generation: Boiler, superheater and reheater piping. Because they can withstand high steam temperatures and pressures and have good creep resistance.
    • Petrochemical Industry: Handles hot hydrocarbons and corrosive gases and is commonly used in refineries, heat exchangers and process piping.
    • Oil & Gas: High temperature piping and fittings.
    • Heat Exchangers: F11 and F12 are required for components that come into contact with hot fluids in a variety of industries.
    • Steam Piping: High pressure steam piping and associated stainless steel fittings.
