Crucial Heat Treatment for Stress Relief
Cold working (drawing and grinding) introduces massive residual stresses into the crystal lattice.Internal stress alters the atomic alignment,directly ruining the low-expansion effect.To restore the properties dictated by its chemical composition,1J36 bright bars require a specialized 3-step stabilization heat treatment:
- Recozimento de solução:
Heat to 830℃ ± 20℃,hold for 30–60 minutes,then water quench to homogenize the structure. - Alívio do estresse:
Heat to 315℃ ± 10℃,hold for 1–4 hours, air cool to eliminate machining stresses. - Artificial Aging:
Heat to 95℃ ± 5℃,hold for 48 hours,air cool to stabilize the micro-structure against micro-creep variations over time.

Work Hardening Rate & Machinability
1J36 is an austenitic alloy,meaning it exhibits a high rate of work hardening during cutting operations.
- The Bright Bar Advantage:
The cold drawing process used to create the “bright” finish pre-hardens the surface layer.This prevents the metal from becoming overly gummy or sticky during automated high-speed CNC turning. - Machining Strategy:
To counter work hardening, machinists must use positive rake angles,sharp carbide inserts,low cutting speeds,and heavy,continuous feeds to ensure the tool stays beneath the work-hardened layer created by the previous pass.
Hardness VS Dimension Stability
There is a direct tradeoff between mechanical strength and thermal stability:
- As-Cold-Drawn:
Increases tensile strength and surface hardness,making the bar easier to drill and tap without burrs.However,it locks in residual macro-stresses that distort the low-expansion coefficient. - Fully Annealed:
Restores the ideal Invar effect and stabilizes micro-creep,but renders the metal softer,highly ductile,and prone to long,stringy chips during machining.
