1J36 Bright Bar

    1J36 Bright Bar

1J36 bright bar is a metal bar manufactured through precision cold-working processes. It is made from 1J36,a specialized nickel-iron alloy known for its extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion.Through advanced finishing processes such as cold drawing, peeling,or centerless grinding, the finished product features an exceptionally smooth, bright surface and strict dimensional tolerances.

    Material Composition & Key Properties

    • Chemical Profile:
It contains roughly 36% nickel combined with a balance of iron, strictly regulating its molecular behavior under shifting temperatures.
    • Stabilité thermique :
It maintains virtually constant dimensions from cryogenic temperatures up to about 250°C (482°F).
    • Surface Quality:
The cold-finished “bright” surface removes all scaling and imperfections, making it immediately ready for automated CNC high-speed machining.

Chemical Composition of 1J36 Bright Bar

The 1J36 alloy is a binary iron-nickel alloy. Its unique low-expansion property relies entirely on the precise ratio of 36% Nickel to 64% Iron.
According to GB/T 14986.2,the chemical composition limits by weight percent are specified as follows:
    NiFeCSiMnPSCrCo
    35.0 – 37.0Équilibre≤ 0.05≤ 0,30≤ 0.60≤ 0,02≤ 0,02≤ 0.25≤ 0.50

    The Invar Effect

The ultra-low thermal expansion of 1J36 is a quantum-mechanical phenomenon called the Invar Effect. At room temperature, the natural thermal expansion (atoms vibrating further apart as they heat up) is precisely counteracted by a magnetic volume contraction (magnetostriction). This delicate balance only occurs when the Nickel content is held strictly between 35% and 37%.

Why the "Bright" Surface Quality Matters

    Hot-rolled black bars → Descaling/Peeling → Cold Drawing → Centerless Grinding → Polishing.
This removes all surface decarburization (carbon loss) and imperfections, delivering a mirror-like finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm) and tight dimensional tolerances (typically h9 or h11).It is ready for direct feeding into high-speed CNC automated lathes.

Crucial Heat Treatment for Stress Relief

Cold working (drawing and grinding) introduces massive residual stresses into the crystal lattice.Internal stress alters the atomic alignment, directly ruining the low-expansion effect. To restore the properties dictated by its chemical composition,1J36 bright bars require a specialized 3-step stabilization heat treatment:

    • Recuit de la solution :
Heat to 830℃ ± 20℃,hold for 30–60 minutes, then water quench to homogenize the structure.
    • Stress Relieving:
Heat to 315℃ ± 10℃,hold for 1–4 hours, air cool to eliminate machining stresses.
    • Artificial Aging:
Heat to 95℃ ± 5℃,hold for 48 hours, air cool to stabilize the micro-structure against micro-creep variations over time.

Mechanical Properties of 1J36 Bright Bar

The mechanical properties of a 1J36 Bright Bar are defined by its balanced austenitic matrix. While its primary engineering value lies in its ultra-low thermal expansion, maintaining specific mechanical boundaries is critical to ensure structural integrity and successful precision machining.

    Work Hardening Rate & Machinability

1J36 is an austenitic alloy, meaning it exhibits a high rate of work hardening during cutting operations.

    • The Bright Bar Advantage:
The cold drawing process used to create the “bright” finish pre-hardens the surface layer. This prevents the metal from becoming overly gummy or sticky during automated high-speed CNC turning.
    • Machining Strategy:
To counter work hardening, machinists must use positive rake angles, sharp carbide inserts, low cutting speeds, and heavy, continuous feeds to ensure the tool stays beneath the work-hardened layer created by the previous pass.

    Hardness VS Dimension Stability

There is a direct tradeoff between mechanical strength and thermal stability:

    • As-Cold-Drawn:
Increases tensile strength and surface hardness, making the bar easier to drill and tap without burrs. However,it locks in residual macro-stresses that distort the low-expansion coefficient.

    • Fully Annealed:
Restores the ideal Invar effect and stabilizes micro-creep,but renders the metal softer, highly ductile, and prone to long, stringy chips during machining.

    Cryogenic Ductility and Toughness

Unlike ferritic steels that become brittle and fracture under extreme cold,1J36 maintains its face-centered cubic structure. As the temperature drops down to liquid nitrogen or liquid helium ranges:

    • Tensile and yield strengths increase significantly.
    • Elongation and impact toughness remain exceptionally high.
    • This unique mechanical resilience makes 1J36 bright bars perfect for manufacturing structural supports, cryogenic valves, and fluid fasteners in liquified gas systems.

Our Advantages in Manufacturing 1J36 Bright Bar

Backed by precision cold-drawing technologies, our bright bars achieve tight dimensional accuracy up to h8 or h9 levels, making them perfectly optimized for direct,high-speed automated CNC machining.

    Advanced Thermal Stabilization

Every production batch undergoes a proprietary three-stage stress-relief and artificial aging heat treatment, ensuring permanent micro-structural stability and preventing dimensional drifting over long-term use.

    FAQs About 1J36 Bright Bar

The difference lies in surface processing and dimensional precision.A Black Bar is hot-rolled and retains a dark, rough oxide scale with loose dimensional tolerances.A Bright Bar is produced by taking a black bar and subjecting it to cold finishing (peeling, cold drawing, centerless grinding, and polishing).Bright bars feature a mirror-like finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm),precise diameter tolerances (such as h9 or h11),and zero surface decarburization, making them ready for immediate CNC automated machining.
The “Invar Effect” relies completely on a precise chemical balance of 36% Nickel and 64% Iron.If the nickel content drifts by even 1%,the thermal expansion coefficient can double.High-quality manufacturers use VIM to lock the nickel content tightly between 35.8% and 36.2% while minimizing trace impurities like Carbon,Phosphorus, and Sulfur which ruin the alloy’s stability.
Yes,severely.1J36 is an austenitic alloy that work-hardens rapidly.Heavy machining, drilling, and grinding introduce massive internal residual stresses into the crystal lattice.Internal stress disrupts the magnetic alignment of the atoms, ruining the low-expansion effect. To restore its original properties, the machined components must undergo a post-machining stress-relief heat treatment (typically at 315°C ± 10°C) before final metrology or assembly.
Yes,exceptionally so.Unlike standard carbon steels that become brittle and crack in extreme cold,1J36 retains its FCC crystal structure. At cryogenic temperatures, its tensile and yield strengths actually increase while it maintains excellent impact toughness and ductility. This makes it ideal for liquid gas valves, aerospace fuel systems, and cryogenic piping joints.
