Nimonic 80A Introduction | Pros&Cons | Characterizations

Stainless steel pipes and stainless steel pipe fittings made from Nimonic 80A are an excellent solution for piping systems subjected to extreme stress. This high performance alloy can withstand high thermal and mechanical loads.

    Nimonic 80A | UNS N07080

Nimonic 80A is a member of the Nimonic Alloy family, which is also a nickel-based alloy. Its composition includes titanium and aluminum, elements that allow it to be age-hardened. This process greatly increases its mechanical properties and also resists creep deformation. It works reliably at temperatures up to 815°C (1500°F).

    Key Advantages of Nimonic 80A

Nimonic 80A resists creep deformation and retains its shape under prolonged high temperature conditions and stress.

The alloy maintains stability at temperatures up to 815°C (1500°F) and prevents heat softening.

The high chromium content protects surfaces from oxidation in high temperature environments.

Nimonic 80A in High Temperature Piping Systems

    • High Temperature Bolts and Fasteners: It resists creep, maintains joint integrity and is the preferred choice for joining high temperature flanges.
    • Turbine Blades: Widely used in gas turbines. It can withstand high heat and stress and is critical for aerospace and power generation.
    • Heat Exchanger Tubes: Heat exchanger tubes must be able to withstand thermal cycling, and these components rely on the extreme strength of Nimonic 80A.
    • Piping Systems: Can be used for critical stainless steel fittings such as high pressure exhaust systems. These components require the same high strength as heat exchanger tubes.

    Sourcing and Fabricating Nimonic 80A

A complete Material Test Report (MTR) is required. It verifies the precise composition of the alloy and ensures its performance.

Work with specialized suppliers of stainless steel pipe and fittings. They understand these alloy steels and can ensure proper fabrication and quality control, and are ISO 9001 and CE-PED certified.

It is difficult to machine and requires special tools. Specific welding techniques are essential to ensure the integrity of the weld.

It is expensive, so it is important to assess whether the product has a longer service life. This can justify its higher initial cost.
