Haynes 188 : Breakthrough in Durability Beyond Stainless Steel

Designed specifically for extreme high-temperature environments, Haynes 188 is a high-performance superalloy. This material provides a superior solution when ordinary stainless steel cannot meet requirements. Using Haynes 188 ensures the durability of stainless steel pipes and stainless steel pipe fittings, providing long-term reliability where it is most needed.

    What is Haynes 188: A High-Performance Cobalt-Based Alloy

Haynes 188 (UNS R30188) is a specialised cobalt-based alloy renowned for its high strength and excellent oxidation resistance. It is composed of cobalt, nickel, chromium and tungsten, giving it outstanding thermal stability.

    Key Strengths of Haynes 188

Haynes 188 performs reliably at extreme temperatures and resists creep deformation. It can be used in furnace and engine components.

Its high chromium content provides resistance to degradation in oxidising atmospheres and protection against sulphurisation.

The strength of this material does not decline rapidly at high temperatures like other materials.

Haynes 188 is easy to form and weld. It is suitable for complex manufacturing processes and for creating strong, reliable joints in piping systems.

Applications of Haynes 188 in Pipelines and Related Systems

    • Furnace components: Due to their ability to withstand extreme high temperatures and chemical corrosion while maintaining structural integrity, they can be used in radiation tubes and furnace chambers.
    • Gas turbine components: They can withstand high thermal stresses and are the preferred material for combustion chamber linings and afterburner components.
    • Heat exchangers: They can be used in heat exchanger piping, as these components require extremely high strength and can withstand thermal cycling.
    • Piping systems: Key stainless steel fittings require extremely high strength and corrosion resistance, such as in high-temperature exhaust systems.

Sourcing and Processing of Haynes 188

A complete Material Test Report (MTR) is required. It verifies the precise composition of the alloy and ensures its performance.

Work with specialized suppliers of stainless steel pipe and fittings. They understand these alloy steels and can ensure proper fabrication and quality control, and are ISO 9001 and CE-PED certified.

This alloy is difficult to machine and requires special tools. Specific welding techniques are essential to ensure the integrity of the weld.

This alloy is expensive, so it is important to assess whether the product has a longer service life. This can justify its higher initial cost.
