Nimonic 86 is a solid solution strengthened alloy, which means it cannot be age hardened. Its strength is realized through its chemical composition. It contains high levels of chromium and molybdenum, which provide excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and carburization. It provides reliable performance at temperatures up to 1100℃ (2012 ℉).
Age hardening is divided into two main steps. First, the alloy is heated, which is called solid solution treatment, and it dissolves all the alloying elements. Then, the material is rapidly cooled, which is called quenching, and the alloying elements are “trapped” in solution. Next, the material is reheated to a lower temperature, which is called aging. The trapped elements form fine particles, which impede dislocation motion, which strengthens the material.
Nimonic 81 is a high quality high temperature material. Its composition includes titanium and aluminum, which allow it to be age-hardened. Age-hardening greatly increases its mechanical properties and also improves creep resistance. It works reliably at temperatures up to 815°C (1500°F).
Nimonic 80A is a member of the Nimonic Alloy family, which is also a nickel-based alloy. Its composition includes titanium and aluminum, elements that allow it to be age-hardened. Nimonic 75 is a nickel-based alloy belonging to the group Nimonic Alloy, which contains about 20% chromium and therefore has excellent oxidation resistance. It has good mechanical properties at high temperatures.
