Global Stainless Steel Output In The First Three Quarters Increased By 3.4% Year-on-year, China’s Production Capacity Grows Lower
According to SMM reports, statistics released recently by the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) on December 12 show that in the first three quarters of 2019, global stainless steel crude steel output totaled 39.809 million tons, an increase of about 3.4% from the 38.486 million tons in the same period last year.
In terms of different regions, except for mainland China, which increased by about 11.7% year-on-year to 22.49 million tons, the other major regions have experienced different levels of decline year-on-year:
- Europe decreased by approximately 7.2% year-on-year to 5.234 million tons;
- The United States fell by approximately 7.5% year-on-year to 2.019 million tons;
- Excluding Mainland China, South Korea, and Indonesia (mainly Japan, India, and Taiwan of China) fell by approximately 5.4% year-on-year to 5.879 million tons;
- Other regions (Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, and Indonesia) fell by 3.1% year-on-year to 4.188 million tons.
In the third quarter of 2019, global stainless steel crude steel production continued to increase to 13.693 million tons, an increase of nearly 2.2%.
Among them, except for Europe, which continued to fall by about 19% month-on-month to 1.492 million tons, the other major regions have increased month-on-month:
- The United States increased by 3.4% from the previous month to 669,000 tons;
- Mainland China continued to increase by nearly 6.1% sequentially to 8.135 million tons;
- The Asia region excluding Mainland China, South Korea, and Indonesia increased by nearly 2.2% from the previous month to 1.98 million tons;
- Other regions increased by nearly 8.5% from the previous month to 1.417 million tons.
According to SMM, from 2017 to 2019, China’s stainless steel capacity production showed a low-speed growth. On the one hand, the rise of the stainless steel industry in Indonesia has a negative impact on Chinese manufacturers; on the other hand, the economic growth rate has declined, and some downstream consumer areas such as real estate and automobiles bid farewell to the rapid growth, resulting in a slight decline in China’s stainless steel consumption growth rate, consumption growth rate in 2019 fell to 4.5%.
