316/316L Stainless Steel Pipe

    316 / 316L Stainless Steel Pipe

316 / 316L Stainless Steel Pipe is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel widely known as “Marine Grade” due to its exceptional resistance to chloride-induced corrosion.

Heat Treatment of 316 / 316L Stainless Steel Pipe

    Solution Annealing

    • Temperature:
      Heat to 1900°F – 2150°F (1040°C – 1175°C).
    • Hold time:
Typically 1 hour per inch of thickness.
    • Cooling:
Must be rapidly quenched (water or air cooling) to prevent carbide regrowth. For optimum corrosion resistance, the metal should be cooled to a “black-hot” state within 3 minutes.

    Stress Relieving

    • For 316L:
Can be heat treated within the range of 850°F–1100°F (454°C–593°C) with extremely low sensitization risk (i.e., minimal susceptibility to corrosion-induced embrittlement).
    • For standard 316:
Stress relief is typically performed at lower temperatures, not exceeding 750°F (400°C),to prevent carbide precipitation.
    • Risk:
Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures between 900°F–1600°F (538°C–871°C),as this may induce σ-phase formation, causing embrittlement of the steel.

    Hot Working

    • Forging Temperature:
      2100°F – 2300°F (1149°C – 1260°C).
    • Note:
Forging temperature must not fall below 1700°F (927°C).Full solution annealing is mandatory after hot working to restore material properties.

    Bright Annealing

A specialized process conducted in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere to prevent oxidation, ultimately forming a smooth, reflective surface that eliminates the need for subsequent acid washing or polishing.

Manufacturing Standards for 316 / 316L Stainless Steel Pipe

    • ASTM A312 / ASME SA312:
The most versatile standard covering seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes for high-temperature and general corrosion environments.
    • ASTM A358 / ASME SA358:
Applicable to electric-fusion welded stainless steel pipes, typically used for large-diameter heavy-duty pipelines requiring X-ray non-destructive testing.
    • ASTM A269:
Suitable for general-purpose instrumentation or heat exchange tubes, with higher dimensional accuracy and surface quality requirements than A312.
    • ASTM A213 / ASME SA213:
Specifies seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy steel tubes for boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers.
    • ASTM A249 / ASME SA249:
Standard for welded boiler and heat exchanger tubes.
    • ASME B36.19M:
Dimension standard specifically for stainless steel tubes, defining the relationship between Schedule (e.g., 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S) and nominal diameter (NPS).
    • ASME B36.10M:
Although the primary standard for carbon steel tubes, it is also referenced for certain thick-walled stainless steel tubes.
    • ASTM A270:
Specifically for sanitary tubing in food, dairy, and pharmaceutical industries, with mandatory requirements for internal surface roughness (Ra value).
