316H Stainless Steel has a strong resistance to creep deformation when stainless steel pipework is exposed to high temperatures. Ensure reliable performance of your stainless steel pipe and stainless steel fittings.
What Is 316H Stainless Steel? The High-Temp Workhorse!
316H Stainless Steel (UNS S31609) is a high-carbon version of 316 Stainless Steel. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy. The high carbon content sets it apart, and the higher carbon content improves strength at high temperatures. It also improves creep resistance, which makes 316H stainless steel ideal for applications above 500 degrees Celsius (932 degrees Fahrenheit).
Key Advantages of 316H Stainless Steel
316H stainless steel resists deformation under load. It will not deform even at very high temperatures.
Higher carbon content allows it to resist slow, permanent deformation over time. Good for long-term use.
Like 316 stainless steel, 316H stainless steel resists pitting. In addition, it resists crevice corrosion. Contains molybdenum for excellent corrosion resistance.
Its chromium content creates a protective oxide layer. This extends service life in oxidising environments.
316H stainless steel is suitable for chemical processing, power generation and refining. Can handle corrosive media at high temperatures.

316H Stainless Steel in High-Temperature Piping Applications
- Pressure Vessels: Handling of high temperature and high pressure vessels, including steam headers and heat exchangers.
- Boiler components: 316H stainless steel is used for superheater and reheater pipework. Can withstand high heat and steam pressures.
- Refinery Piping: Commonly found in petrochemical plants and can be used to handle hot process fluids. This includes furnaces and crackers.
- Power Plants: Components that come into contact with flue gases or hot steam can be made of 316H Stainless Steel.
- Chemical Process Piping: Used for transporting hot corrosive chemicals. 316H maintains strength and corrosion resistance.
Sourcing 316H Stainless Steel Pipe and Fittings
Check for compliance with ASTM standards. ASTM A312 covers seamless and welded stainless steel pipe. ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings.
Ensure that pipes and fittings meet the required dimensions. This includes specifications (e.g., Sch 10S, Sch 40S). Proper fit is critical.

Work with reputable manufacturers who offer reliable 316H steel products and have certifications(e.g. ISO 9001 and CE-PED).
Always ask for Material Test Reports, which confirm chemical composition and verify mechanical properties.
While 316H is designed for high temperatures, specific welding procedures are critical. If your application requires it, ensure proper post-weld treatment.
