ASME Flange B16.5-1996 and B16.47-1996

A flange is a method of connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other equipment to form a piping system. It also provides easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. Flanges are usually welded or screwed. Flanged joints are made by bolting together two flanges with a gasket between them to provide a seal.

How to Select A ASME Flange

The selection of ASME flanges primarily depends on the application scenario, pipe size, pressure rating, operating temperature, material, flange type and flange face. They must comply with ASME B16.5 (small bore) or B16.47 (large bore) standards to ensure proper pressure and size matching, while also considering the corrosiveness of the medium and sealing requirements.

Standards,Dimensions And NPS

  • ASME B16.5:Applies to flanges from 1/2“ to 24”.
  • ASME B16.47:Applies to large flanges of 26″ and above, divided into Series A and Series B.
  • Matches the NPS of the connected pipe.

Working temperature

The flange must be capable of withstanding the maximum operating temperature of the system medium, with the pressure rating corresponding to the temperature.

Flange Type

  • Weld Neck Flange (WN):Preferred for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, providing a secure connection.
  • Socket Weld Flange (SO):Suitable for medium and low-pressure applications, offering easy installation.
  • Blind Flange (BL): Used to seal off the end of a pipeline.
  • Threaded Flange (TH), Socket Weld Flange (SW), Lap Joint Flange (LAP), etc.

Flange sealing face

  • Raised Face (RF): Most common, used for medium and high pressure.
  • Flat Face (FF): Used for low pressure and non-metallic piping.
  • Mismatched Face (MFM), Ring Type Joint (RTJ),etc.,require matching with gaskets.

Pressure Class

Determined based on the system’s maximum working pressure, such as Class 150, 300, 600, 900, etc.

Material

It must be compatible with the conveyed medium and the working environment, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel. Find the most suitable one.
