    High nickel and chromium content not only stabilizes the austenitic microstructure but also provides the pipe with a highly resistant foundation against various organic and inorganic acids. It effectively prevents SCC.

    Significantly enhances the material’s resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in marine environments or high-concentration chloride solutions.

    The addition of copper greatly enhances the material’s corrosion resistance in reducing environments,particularly in dilute sulfuric acid,as well as phosphoric and acetic acids.

    The extremely low carbon content prevents the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding or heat treatment,thereby completely eliminating the risk of intergranular corrosion.

    Key Mechanical Properties

    As a super austenitic stainless steel,904L offers an elongation of over 40%.This means that even when subjected to external impacts,severe bending, or cold working,the piping maintains an extremely high margin of safety against fracture.

    904L does not undergo a brittle transition even at extremely low temperatures.This makes it ideal for specialized industrial piping systems involving cryogenic media.

    Although 904L has slightly higher strength than standard 316L,it maintains moderate hardness.The piping is easy to cold bend,flare,and machine during actual installation.

    The temperature range is 1090°C – 1175°C (1995°F – 2150°F).At these high temperatures,carbides and unstable intermetallic phases are completely dissolved back into the austenitic matrix. Cooling must be rapid.Slow cooling leads to the re-precipitation of chromium and molybdenum carbides at grain boundaries,which significantly impairs the pipe’s resistance to pitting and intergranular corrosion.

    The temperature range is 1050°C – 1100°C (1920°F – 2010°F).The purpose is to eliminate significant internal residual stresses and prevent SCC.
    It is strictly prohibited to hold or cool 904L slowly in the 450°C – 850°C range,as this is the temperature range where brittle phases are prone to precipitation.

    Post-Weld Heat Treatment

    904L is an ultra-low-carbon steel;when used for medium-to-thin-walled pipes and welded using the correct process,post-weld heat treatment is not required. If the pipe wall thickness is significant,or if the pipe is to be used in extremely harsh,highly corrosive environments,it is recommended to perform a full post-weld heat treatment after welding to completely eliminate segregation in the heat-affected zone.

    Pickling & Passivation

    High-temperature heat treatment forms a black,iron-rich scale on the surface of 904L pipes,and the chromium concentration beneath this scale decreases.The scale must be thoroughly removed using a nitric acid–hydrofluoric acid pickling solution,followed by passivation to re-establish a dense,protective passivation film rich in chromium and molybdenum on the pipe surface.

    904L contains higher levels of nickel and molybdenum,with the addition of copper.While Tubes en acier inoxydable 316L are highly susceptible to pitting and general corrosion when exposed to seawater and dilute sulfuric acid,904L exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance in warm,concentrated sulfuric acid,phosphoric acid,and marine environments.

    The material cost of 904L stainless steel pipe is typically two to three times that of 316L.Furthermore,the high nickel content of 904L results in poor thermal conductivity and a high coefficient of thermal expansion.Stricter process control is required during machining and welding;otherwise,hot cracking is likely to occur.It is used exclusively in certain extreme corrosion environments.

    Non.904L is an austenitic stainless steel,and its internal microstructure does not undergo phase transformation during heating and cooling.The sole purpose of heat treating 904L piping is to relieve cold-working stresses and dissolve harmful precipitates,thereby fully restoring its optimal corrosion resistance.
