316 Stainless Steel Flange

    316 Stainless Steel Flange Supplier: 316, 316L

A 316 stainless steel flange is a forged or plate mechanical component used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment within a piping system. It is made from Grade 316,an austenitic stainless steel that contains roughly 16–18% chromium,10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum.
316L stainless steel flanges are the “low-carbon” version of 316-grade stainless steel, with a carbon content strictly limited to 0.03% or less. These flanges are specifically designed for piping systems that require welding and are exposed to high corrosion risks.
Since 2007, Kaysuns has been supplying custom bridas de acero inoxidable to industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, offshore operations, and marine vessels.Contact us to get your personalized quote.

Chemical Composition of 316 Stainless Steel Flange (316/L)

The chemical composition of 316L and 316 stainless steel flanges is governed by standards like ASTM A182 (forged components). The primary difference is the carbon content, which is strictly limited in the “L” (Low Carbon) variant to improve weldability.

    Role of Key Elements

    Molibdeno:
Provides “marine-grade” resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments.
    Níquel:
Stabilizes the austenitic microstructure, ensures the flanges remain non-magnetic,and maintains high toughness even at low temperatures.
    Cromo:
Forms a passive oxide layer that protects the surface from oxidation and corrosion.
    Carbon:
Reduced to a maximum of 0.03% in 316L to prevent carbide precipitation during welding, which would otherwise deplete chromium at grain boundaries and lead to “weld corrosion.”

    Dual Certification (316/316L)

In modern manufacturing, many flanges have obtained dual 316/316L certification. This is achieved by maintaining the low carbon content (≤0.03%) of 316L while ensuring that its mechanical strength still meets the higher requirements of standard 316,typically through the precise addition of nitrogen.

As a professional and reliable supplier of 316 stainless steel flanges,Kaysuns is capable of providing flanges ranging from Class 150 to Class 2500,with rated loads of 150 lbs,300 lbs,600 lbs,900 lbs,1,500 lbs,and 2,500 lbs,and in sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to 72 inches (DN15 to DN1800).

Mechanical Properties of 316 Stainless Steel Flange Series

The mechanical properties of 316 and 316L stainless steel flanges are defined by their strength, ductility, and hardness. While both grades are similar, the higher carbon content in standard 316 provides slightly more strength, whereas 316L is optimized for better weldability at a slightly lower strength threshold.

    High-Temperature & Cryogenic Performance

    • Allowable Stress:
Grade 316 generally has higher allowable design stresses than 316L,particularly above 850℉ (454℃),because carbon acts as a strengthener against creep.
    • Temperature Range:
Both grades maintain integrity in intermittent service up to 870℃ (1600℉).
    • Cryogenic Toughness:
Due to their austenitic structure, both grades exhibit excellent impact strength and toughness at sub-zero and cryogenic temperatures.

4 Manufacturing Methods for 304 Stainless Steel Flange

    Forging

316/316L steel ingots or billets are heated to a plastic state, and pressure is applied using forging machinery (such as presses or drop hammers) to deform them.Suitable for high-pressure,high-temperature,or critical industrial systems.

    Centrifugal Casting

Molten 316/316L metal is injected into a rapidly rotating mold, where centrifugal force pushes the metal toward the mold walls. This process is suitable for large-diameter flanges or as blanks for subsequent machining.

    Plate Cutting

316 or 316L stainless steel sheets conforming to the ASTM A240 standard are used directly;circular profiles are cut using plasma, waterjet,or laser cutting, followed by precision machining.

    Sand Casting

The molten metal is poured into a mold cavity formed by sand. After cooling and solidifying, the castings are removed and machined.Suitable for low-pressure,non-critical general fluid delivery systems.

FAQs About 316 Stainless Steel Flange Grades

Yes.Compared to Brida de acero inoxidable 304,the 316 series contains 2–3% more molybdenum (Mo),which significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. It is the standard choice for marine applications, coastal facilities, and industrial wastewater with high salinity.

You can check the stamp on the side of the flange, which will indicate ASTM A182 F316 or F316L.
Alternatively, you can refer to the MTR (Material Test Report) provided by the manufacturer using the furnace number;the report will list the actual chemical composition in detail.
