Apr\u00e8s avoir ajout\u00e9 du chrome dans l&#039;acier inoxydable, un oxyde avec un rapport chimique de dioxyde de fer se formera \u00e0 sa surface. L&#039;affinit\u00e9 du chrome et de l&#039;oxyg\u00e8ne \u00e9tant bien sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle du fer, la pr\u00e9sence de chrome augmente la stabilit\u00e9 de cet oxyde. L&#039;acier avec une teneur en chrome sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 10,5% est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme inoxydable dans l&#039;atmosph\u00e8re. Cependant, l&#039;augmentation de la teneur en chrome dans les alliages Fe-Cr-C ou Fe-Cr-Ni-C favorisera la formation et les r\u00e9sidus de ferrite dans l&#039;acier inoxydable martensitique, l&#039;acier inoxydable aust\u00e9nitique et l&#039;acier inoxydable duplex. Dans l&#039;acier alli\u00e9 ferritique, le chrome est le principal \u00e9l\u00e9ment d&#039;alliage qui stabilise la structure de la ferrite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la corrosion de l&#039;acier inoxydable d\u00e9pend du Cr, mais comme le Cr est l&#039;un des composants de l&#039;acier, les m\u00e9thodes de protection sont diff\u00e9rentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsque la quantit\u00e9 de chrome ajout\u00e9e atteint 10,5%, la r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la corrosion atmosph\u00e9rique de l'acier est consid\u00e9rablement accrue, mais lorsque la teneur en chrome est plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e, bien que la r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la corrosion puisse encore \u00eatre am\u00e9lior\u00e9e, ce n'est pas \u00e9vident. La raison en est que lorsque le chrome est utilis\u00e9 pour allier l'acier, le type d'oxyde de surface est modifi\u00e9 pour devenir un oxyde de surface similaire \u00e0 celui form\u00e9 sur le m\u00e9tal de chrome pur. Cet oxyde riche en chrome, qui adh\u00e8re fermement, prot\u00e8ge la surface et emp\u00eache toute oxydation suppl\u00e9mentaire. Cette couche d'oxyde est extr\u00eamement fine, et l'\u00e9clat naturel de la surface de l'acier est visible \u00e0 travers elle, ce qui donne \u00e0 l'acier inoxydable une surface unique.
