Despu\u00e9s de agregar cromo en acero inoxidable, se formar\u00e1 en su superficie un \u00f3xido con una proporci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica de di\u00f3xido de hierro. Dado que la afinidad del cromo y el ox\u00edgeno es mucho mayor que la del hierro, la presencia de cromo aumenta la estabilidad de este \u00f3xido. El acero con un contenido de cromo superior a 10,5% se considera inoxidable en la atm\u00f3sfera. Sin embargo, el aumento del contenido de cromo en las aleaciones Fe-Cr-C o Fe-Cr-Ni-C promover\u00e1 la formaci\u00f3n y residuo de ferrita en el acero inoxidable martens\u00edtico, el acero inoxidable austen\u00edtico y el acero inoxidable d\u00faplex. En el acero de aleaci\u00f3n ferr\u00edtica, el cromo es el principal elemento de aleaci\u00f3n que estabiliza la estructura de ferrita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La resistencia a la corrosi\u00f3n del acero inoxidable depende del Cr, pero debido a que el Cr es uno de los componentes del acero, los m\u00e9todos de protecci\u00f3n son diferentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuando la cantidad de adici\u00f3n de cromo alcanza los 10,5%, la resistencia a la corrosi\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica del acero aumenta considerablemente, pero cuando el contenido de cromo es mayor, aunque la resistencia a la corrosi\u00f3n puede seguir mejorando, no es evidente. La raz\u00f3n es que cuando se utiliza cromo para alear el acero, el tipo de \u00f3xido superficial cambia a un \u00f3xido superficial similar al que se forma en el metal de cromo puro. Este \u00f3xido rico en cromo, fuertemente adherido, protege la superficie e impide una mayor oxidaci\u00f3n. Esta capa de \u00f3xido es extremadamente fina, y el brillo natural de la superficie del acero puede verse a trav\u00e9s de ella, lo que confiere al acero inoxidable una superficie \u00fanica.
